Australia is falling behind in contactless payments

Australia leads the world in contactless card payments, yet it’s missing a major opportunity. While 98% of retail transactions are tap-and-go, businesses still pay significant fees for every transaction. Meanwhile, the country’s fee-free New Payments Platform (NPP) processes more payments than all cards combined—but almost exclusively for P2P transfers. By adopting QR code payments using standardised URIs like RFC 8905, Australia could democratise B2C payments, eliminate transaction fees for businesses, and leverage existing banking infrastructure without requiring new apps or hardware.
